The Blackfoot legend Poia, or “Scarface”: son of the maiden Feather Woman and the Morning Star god. Gilleon depicts him as a worldly figure anchored in mortal time and space. Emphasizing Poia’s humanity helps us recognize the divinity within ourselves.

This portrait captures Chief Joseph Nine Pipes in old age. In simple side profile, the subject addresses not the audience, but the memory of a world long gone. The chief’s face glows with an internal fire, however: a resilient ember within the ash.

“Two Guns White Calf”

Blackfeet chief Two Guns White Calf claimed to be the model for the 1913 Indian Head Nickel, a fact which sculptor James Earle Fraser denied. Nonetheless, Two Guns White Calf used his fame to travel the world and promote and preserve Blackfeet heritage.

“Black Elk”

The Lakota Sioux called men like Black Elk heyoka, or Contraries. In any given situation they would act opposite to the social norm, saying “goodbye” to mean hello and so on. It was also likely that Black Elk, a highly respected spiritual leader within the tribe, was homosexual.
